Descrizione
The Sanzio Theater, the cultural hub of Urbino in the Marche, is an icon of the city’s theatrical history. Built in 1845 and inaugurated in 1853 with Verdi’s “Il trovatore”, it bears the name of the famous painter Raffaello Sanzio, born in Urbino.
The building, in neoclassical style, stands out for its elegant sandstone façade, enriched by an entrance portal surmounted by a tympanum and finely decorated windows. Inside, the horseshoe-shaped structure houses three tiers of boxes.
The result of the initiative of the Municipality and the project of the architect Vincenzo Ghinelli, the Sanzio Theater represented a cultural turning point for Urbino, with its inauguration on August 22, 1853 marking a moment of great importance for the city.
Today, the Teatro Sanzio continues to offer a vibrant theatrical season, enriched by prose, music and dance performances, as well as concerts, festivals and cultural events, keeping the tradition and art of entertainment alive in the Urbino community.
