Historic Renaissance villages: from Montefabbri to Colbordolo
The oldest and deepest part of Vallefoglia winds its way along the scenic ridges linking Pesaro, Urbino and the Carpegna. The absolute jewel of the area is Montefabbri, listed among Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages: a hilltop castle that still preserves its city gate, walls and the thousand-year-old parish church of San Gaudenzio, a precious treasure trove of sacred art. Not far away, the village of Colbordolo maintains an indissoluble link with the Renaissance: it was here that Giovanni Santi, painter, poet and father of the legendary Raffaello Sanzio, was born. The town’s Cultural Centre and the ‘Park of the Muses and Nymphs’ are dedicated to him – a poetic project that uses the River Foglia as a unifying thread to bring together landscape, art and rural imagination.
Sant’Angelo in Lizzola and the legacy of rural life
Sant’Angelo in Lizzola retains all the charm of a fortified village in the Marche region, as evident in the town tower and the monumental Palazzo Mamiani. Not far away, the 18th-century Fonte dei Poeti commemorates the cultural circle frequented by Leopardi and Rossini, whilst the Church of Sant’Egidio stands out as a masterpiece of the local Baroque style. In July, the historic streets of the village of Montefabbri are transformed into an open-air stage for Fiesta Global, the renowned festival dedicated to global arts. Organised by the Tribaleggs association in partnership with the local council, the event transforms one of Italy’s most beautiful castles into a vibrant space for socialising and inclusion. For three days, the festival brings the village to life with a rich cultural programme: live shows, concerts, exhibitions, travelling art performances, children’s areas and a selection of street food, offering visitors of all ages an original, festive and memorable experience.
