The Collegiate Church of Sant’Ubaldo in Barchi is an important architectural and religious building overlooking the town’s main square. The church was designed by the architect Terzi and features distinctive characteristics that make it a landmark in the region.
Built with three naves, the central one being higher, the Collegiate Church of Sant’Ubaldo is an example of Renaissance religious architecture. Inside the church there are several side altars housing paintings of great value. Among these works, the ‘Crucifixion with Saints Ubaldo and Francis’, attributed to Nicolò Martinelli, stands out as one of the church’s masterpieces. Other paintings of considerable value include the anonymous Saint Michael the Archangel and The Virgin, Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Francis, the latter probably one of Guerrieri’s earliest works.
One of the most distinctive features of the Collegiate Church of Saint Ubaldo is the important historic organ housed in the gallery above the church’s main door. This organ, built by the famous Venetian organ builder Gaetano Callido, is renowned for its beauty and its unusual pastel colours. Callido is regarded as one of the leading figures of the 18th-century neoclassical organ-building school, and his work on this musical instrument lends further prestige to the church.
