Belforte all’Isauro lies where the Marche region nestles between Umbria and Tuscany. It is a village clustered around Beaufort Castle, the medieval stronghold that overlooks the valley and preserves its millennia-old history. Surrounding the village, the landscape opens out onto a spectacular ring of mountains and valleys that define its boundaries: the majestic Mount Carpegna, the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Nature Reserve, the upper Metauro Valley and the Alpe della Luna. Here, history seems to blend gently with the landscape, offering visitors an experience suspended in time.
In the Middle Ages, the village grew and was fortified around its castle, which bore witness to successive lordships, disputes and the glorious rule of the Montefeltro family. Centuries later, its history became intertwined with that of the Prussian baron Federico Gaspare Hermann von Beaufort, who arrived here in 1864, convinced that the manor belonged to his family. Regarded at the time as a visionary, the baron instead demonstrated a deep love for this land: in his will, he bequeathed to the local council the funds to purchase the castle and put it to public use. And so it is that the ancient manor has become the beating heart and shared heritage of the entire community.
Set against the monumental grandeur of the castle, in what was almost a perfect symbolic balance, once stood the parish church of San Lorenzo in Foglia, dating from the Carolingian period. Although the terrible earthquake of 1781 destroyed it, the collapse miraculously left an ancient wooden crucifix intact. Today, this symbol is kept in the new parish church dedicated to San Lorenzo, built in 1921 in a refined late Renaissance and Baroque-Neoclassical style.
Not far away, in the hamlet of Campo, a small sacred building preserves the memory of the most unexpected of miracles: a snowfall in the height of summer.
Amidst winding roads, woods and uphill stretches, the Church of the Madonna della Neve suddenly comes into view beside a tower: silent, secluded and a faithful reminder of the village’s past. Finally, at the entrance to the village, visitors are greeted by the Tricuspid Tabernacle, built of brick and terracotta and created in the Holy Year of 1900 by the local craftsman Pietro Luccarini, which depicts three scenes: the Annunciation, the Crucifixion and the Assumption of the Virgin.
Alongside its rich history, Belforte is home to a treasure of gold and sweetness: honey. This long-standing tradition gave rise to the Isauro Organic Bee Park, a pioneering project dedicated to biodiversity and the protection of bees. Situated at the very spot where the River Foglia meets the Rio Maggio stream, the park is the first of its kind in the Marche region.
Along a picturesque walkway linking the park to the castle, visitors can discover how beekeeping techniques have evolved. Soon, this story will continue right at the heart of the manor with the ApiLab (the bee museum) and the creation of themed rooms dedicated to the benefits of apitherapy. For those seeking a complete reconnection with nature, the Belfortfilia project offers a sensory trail through the woods, designed for walking at a leisurely pace and experiencing ‘forest bathing’ – immersing oneself in the woods – whilst breathing in the scents and listening to the rejuvenating sounds of the forest.
The sense of community in Belforte all’Isauro is reflected in the festivals that bring its streets to life every year. The historic Honey Festival, organised by the Pro Loco for the past 37 years, celebrates the work of bees and awards the prestigious ‘Ape d’Oro’ prize to the best wildflower honey from the Montefeltro region, alongside shows, educational workshops and culinary specialities.
Alongside this tradition is the Sustainability Festival, an event that looks to the future by encouraging reflection on the themes of the 2030 Agenda. Two distinct events, yet united by the very same central theme: the alliance between humankind and nature, and the desire to care for the earth, the community and the memory of places.
