6 reasons to visit
Monte Grimano Terme

Situated in the very heart of the Montefeltro region, Monte Grimano Terme strikes a perfect balance between historical heritage and the capacity for renewal. A village that has successfully adapted over the centuries, it now offers a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a refuge from the hectic pace of modern life.

In the Middle Ages, the village’s elevated position made it a crucial vantage point. Monte Grimano formed part of a complex network of visual signalling systems that ensured the defence of the territory, maintaining constant communication with other strategic strongholds such as Gradara and Montefiore.

Although the medieval castle has not survived intact to the present day, its essence can still be felt in the steep alleyways, the arches framing the square and the ancient underground cellars. The village’s architecture is a living testament to humanity’s ability to reshape spaces in accordance with the needs of each era.

The town walls, rebuilt several times between the 15th and 19th centuries, bear witness to the town’s historical development. The pedestrian walkways, once the lifeblood of the castle, now offer picturesque routes that allow visitors to experience first-hand the urban evolution of this town in the Feltre area.

Renowned for its celebrated waters, Monte Grimano boasts a heritage linked to wellbeing that is reflected in the quality of life of its inhabitants. Even without its spa facilities, the village retains this spirit of harmony and self-care, inviting visitors to rediscover a slower, more mindful pace of life.

Monte Grimano Terme exudes a unique charm, characterised by breathtaking views and authentic traditions. It is an invitation to slow down and savour the simplicity of small moments, rediscovering a deep connection with the local area in a place where time seems to pass with a different kind of grace.

Valconca Village

History, relaxation and memories of times gone by

Monte Grimano Terme, a renowned village in the Valconca, embodies in its name and history an indissoluble link with wellbeing, healing and rejuvenation. Situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 536 metres, the village has always been a privileged place for the restoration of body and mind. As far back as Roman times and throughout the Middle Ages, Monte Grimano was frequented by inhabitants of the coastal areas seeking respite from the heat and the toil of the lowlands.

During the Middle Ages, the village’s strategic position made it a key stronghold for controlling the territory. Known as Mons Germanus, it first appears in a charter dated 962, in which Emperor Otto I granted it to Uldarico di Carpegna, in recognition of his support during the capture of San Leo. Under the Counts of Carpegna, Monte Grimano saw the construction of a medieval fortress, characterised by elliptical walls, a moat and a watchtower. With the rise of the Montefeltro family in the 12th century, the village became part of a system of strategic fortifications, playing a key role in the conflicts between the Montefeltro and Malatesta families. In 1461, Duke Federico da Montefeltro definitively recaptured the village, ushering in a period of stability and growth.

During the Renaissance, Monte Grimano reached its peak population, with around 800 inhabitants engaged in agriculture, crafts and trade. However, as military needs declined, the castle gradually lost its defensive function: the fortress was demolished and the walls were adapted to accommodate new homes and civilian buildings.

The thermal waters of Monte Grimano, known since ancient times for their beneficial properties, were rediscovered in the 19th century, marking a new phase of development for the village. These natural resources have made the village a renowned holiday and wellness destination, helping to shape its modern identity. Although the thermal baths are no longer in operation, their spirit lives on in the atmosphere of the village, which evokes serenity and rejuvenation.

Today, although Monte Grimano Terme has lost many of its medieval structures, it retains a living historical memory, as evidenced by the town tower and the town’s layout, which harks back to medieval times. Its evolution, from a strategic fortress to a wellness centre, reflects the village’s ability to adapt to change without losing its identity, offering visitors a unique experience of tranquillity, history and culture.

Massaioli Palace

A symbol of continuity

Palazzo Massaioli, situated in the heart of Monte Grimano Terme, is an elegant 17th-century building, a testament to the prestige and influence of the Massaioli family within the local community. Built as a stately residence, the palace reflects the historical importance of the family, originally from Rimini and linked to the Malatesta family, who settled in the village during the Baroque period.

The palace’s architecture is characterised by the understated exterior façade, which offers a glimpse of the more intimate elegance found within. The central hall, probably used as a council chamber, emphasises the building’s ceremonial character.

The attic rooms have recently been restored, revealing the original beams, whilst the cellars – featuring arches, a well and an ice house – house the municipality’s historical archive. This blend of history and contemporary functionality makes Palazzo Massaioli a symbol of continuity.

Despite the town’s evolution and socio-economic changes, the palace has remained a hub of community life. Today, the building houses the Town Council of Monte Grimano Terme, confirming its central role in administrative management and as a place of historical memory. Palazzo Massaioli, with its architecture and symbolic significance, embodies the identity of Monte Grimano. It is not merely a building, but a bridge between the history of a noble family and the modern life of the village.

The fountain in the historic centre

A historical and cultural attraction

Situated at the entrance to the historic centre, in the picturesque Piazza della Fontana, this architectural feature is one of the landmarks of Monte Grimano Terme. Its history, rich in ups and downs and transformations, reflects the community’s tenacity and care for its heritage.

Originally designed in 1867 to address the summer water shortage, the fountain was part of an ambitious plan that envisaged an imposing aqueduct supported by masonry arches, intended to channel water from the springs of Cà Baratto to the village. However, the project underwent significant changes and the structure that was ultimately built differed from the initial concept.

The current fountain is characterised by a stone basin, set between two pilasters, and three spouts decorated with bronze masks. In the past, water flowed continuously from all three spouts; today, only the right-hand and central spouts remain in use, fitted with brass taps.

Above the fountain, decorations such as four circular frames, two dragons and the town’s coat of arms featuring an angel complete the structure, a symbol of the town’s history and tradition. Over the years, the fountain has undergone several restoration works. Among these, the application of micaceous paint and makeshift repairs have partially altered its original appearance.

Fortunately, detailed studies carried out by academic institutions have made it possible to faithfully document the original decorations and frames, facilitating more accurate restoration work. The latest works, aimed at preserving the fountain’s integrity, have removed non-original elements, restored the weathered stone and replaced missing parts with solutions that respect the original design.

Today, the fountain stands as an example to visitors of the care and appreciation shown towards local heritage, representing not only a functional feature but also a historical and cultural attraction. Once a symbol of daily life and necessity, today the fountain is a landmark for those wishing to immerse themselves in the authentic atmosphere of the village and discover traces of its rich past.

The Civic Tower

Symbols and echoes of tradition

The Civic Tower of Monte Grimano Terme stands as the village’s main landmark, telling the story of centuries of history through its imposing structure. Built in the fifteenth century, the tower formed part of the ancient medieval fortress, a fortified complex that represented the strategic and defensive heart of the community.

Situated at the highest point of the village, the tower originally served as a lookout post to monitor the surrounding area. In 1585, the structure underwent a significant transformation: the crenellated terrace was lowered and the tower was converted into a municipal bell tower, fitted with a public clock.

This change marked the beginning of a new civic function, designed to mark the passage of time for the community. The interior of the tower was subsequently used to house the grain store, known as the ‘Antichissima Abbondanza’, intended to provide for the poor, as documented in 1618.

The public clock, installed in the 18th century, played a fundamental role in the daily life of the village.

Although the original mechanism has been replaced by a system that ensures accuracy and reliability, the hands and the external dial, faithful to the historic style, continue to symbolise the passing of time, preserving the link with the past.

A distinctive feature of the tower is its bells, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which still ring out today to mark significant occasions. In 2001, the Civic Tower underwent a major restoration project aimed at preserving its historical and architectural integrity. The interior was refurbished with new wooden floor joists and the addition of a staircase leading to the belfry.

The exterior was also restored with particular care: the original stones were restored and the masonry joints finished with mortars similar to the historical ones. This work has restored the tower to its former glory, making it accessible. Today, the Civic Tower is not merely a valuable architectural feature. Its clock, bells and the history contained within its walls continue to offer a glimpse into the past.

The Church of St Silvestro

Elegance and simplicity

The Church of San Silvestro, situated in the heart of the historic centre, is an important example of Neoclassical architecture that reflects the elegance and simplicity of the late 18th-century style.

Built towards the end of the 18th century, it was designed by the architect Cosimo Morelli of Imola, renowned for his works in the Papal States. The church overlooks the village’s main square, opposite the Civic Tower. Inside, the Church of San Silvestro houses an artistic heritage of great significance.

Eight large canvases, painted between the 17th and 19th centuries, adorn the walls, bearing witness to the community’s devotion and its links with important artists of the period. Among these, the ‘Madonna della Misericordia incoronata dalla Trinità’ (Our Lady of Mercy Crowned by the Trinity) stands out: an altarpiece from 1607 attributed to Andrea Michieli, known as ‘il Vicentino’.

This work, originally housed in the small votive chapel of the Madonna delle Grazie, situated outside the village walls, was commissioned by Tebaldo Cumano, further enriching the village’s religious heritage.

Another notable feature is the 16th-century Crucifix, which is a rare example of religious art from that period. The evocative atmosphere of the church is made all the more intense by the presence of an 18th-century pipe organ, crafted by organ builders from Bologna and Verucchio. Recently restored, the organ is still in working order, lending the church a musical dimension that enriches liturgical celebrations and cultural events.

The church is dedicated to Pope Saint Sylvester, a historical figure associated with the last day of the year, which symbolises the transition from the old to the new, renewing the sense of continuity and rebirth each time. Its central location and artistic heritage make it a landmark. An unmissable stop for anyone wishing to discover the cultural and spiritual identity of this charming village in the Montefeltro region.
