The Olive Grove of Gradara: an oasis of history, nature and scientific research
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Via dei Cappuccini, at the foot of the majestic western walls of Gradara Castle, stands a stone amphitheatre, nestled within an enchanting garden. This place, known as the Olive Grove, is a real gem that combines scenic beauty with scientific research and fun for the whole family.
What makes this place unique is the presence of centuries-old olive trees, which are the subject of a study by the National Research Council (CNR) aimed at identifying the species’ original stock. This research project adds further charm to the Garden of Olive Trees, transforming it into a must-visit destination for botany enthusiasts and those wishing to deepen their knowledge of Mediterranean plants.
As well as its scientific aspect, the Olive Garden offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea, allowing visitors to immerse themselves completely in the natural beauty of the Romagna Riviera. The eye can lose itself amongst the olive trees, whilst the soul is rejuvenated by breathing in the salty air drifting in from the nearby coast.
Furthermore, the garden’s privileged location offers a view of the entrance to the former Capuchin monastery, a building with a history stretching back a thousand years that adds charm and mystery to Gradara’s already evocative atmosphere. Similarly, the view stretches out to the imposing Rocchetta, a fortified tower that dominates the entire town and stands as a tangible symbol of its medieval history.
The Giardino degli Ulivi is not only a place for contemplation but also for family fun. Not far from the amphitheatre and the olive trees, in fact, there is a small children’s playground. Here, the little ones can have fun in complete safety, whilst their parents relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the garden and the surrounding landscape.
