In the centre of Acqualagna, the memory of Enrico Mattei lives on within the walls of the house where he was born. Now converted into a museum, this house tells the story of a man who was able to see beyond the obvious – a visionary whose legacy extends far beyond the boundaries of his beloved town. Mattei, a key figure in the Italian economic miracle, began his journey with a daring gamble, transforming Agip from a company on the brink of liquidation into a symbol of Italy’s rebirth.
By investing resources and hopes in the natural gas of the Po Valley, he broke the mould and defied expectations, charting the course towards the country’s energy independence. As the founder of ENI, Mattei embodied the belief that business should go beyond profit, pursuing collective well-being and innovation as the driving force behind national progress.
His business philosophy, centred on social responsibility and the inclusion of young talent, remains a benchmark to this day. Mattei’s tragic death in a plane crash cast a shadow of mystery over his legacy, fuelling theories of conspiracy and sabotage.
But what remains undisputed is the legacy he left behind: a dynamic, forward-looking company, as evidenced by the museum that jealously guards his history and values. In every artefact, in every document on display, one can see a man’s passion for his work and his homeland – a passion that helped shape modern Italy and continues to inspire those who believe in a business dedicated to serving the community.
