Descrizione
The structure known as the ‘Clock Tower’ or ‘el Campanon’, with its majestic appearance, served as the main entrance for those arriving in Apecchio via the village.
On either side of the entrance arch, the words ‘concordia praesit’ – meaning ‘may harmony reign’ – are still visible. Above the arch stands the coat of arms of the Ubaldini family. The bell, cast in the mid-17th century and known as ‘Ave Maria Stella’, is housed in the Monte Nerone Museum of Fossils and Minerals.
In 1700, the tower was fitted with a clock, whose original dials are still preserved, whilst the old mechanism is on display at the Museum. The earthquake of 1781 caused it to partially collapse, and the upper floor of the palace also sustained damage. In the square, there are several stately buildings whose architecture is reminiscent of the late Renaissance style.
These buildings were inhabited by the noble families of the time and by the collateral branches of the Ubaldini Counts.
