Adjacent to the civic tower of Mombaroccio stands the Church of St. Mark, a Renaissance emblem founded in 1424. This religious building stands out for its sandstone portal enriched with a bas-relief in Istrian stone representing the Lion of St. Mark, an evangelical symbol, in the act of protecting the Gospel.
The façade, designed by Federico Barocci, leads to a single-nave interior, embellished with side chapels and houses a rich collection of works of art, including frescoes by Federico Barocci and an altarpiece made by Giovanni Santi. Renovated in the twentieth century, the church retains traces of a pre-existing religious building in its crypt and stands as one of the most important religious buildings in Mombaroccio, dedicated to St. Mark the Evangelist, patron saint of the city.
The Church of San Marco, which was also the backdrop for scenes from the film “Life is Beautiful” by Roberto Benigni, is the burial place of Federico Barocci and the center of religious, cultural and musical events that unite the local community.
